Meegan Hefford, a mother of two and bodybuilder, died after an overconsumption of protein shakes, supplements and protein-rich foods.

Hefford was found unconscious in her apartment in West Australia and was quickly transported to the hospital, where she was declared brain-dead.

She passed away two days later.

Hefford, who had been competing as a bodybuilder since 2014, was also ramping up her gym routine in the weeks before her death.

The 25-year-old mom and paramedic trainee had put herself on a special restricted diet while she was preparing for a bodybuilding competition in September.

Upon her death, doctors discovered Hefford had been living with a rare disorder — urea cycle disorder — which stops the body from being able to break down protein.
The 40-year-old Mayweather, who fights the UFC lightweight champion in a mega-pay-per-view bout on Aug. 26 at T-Mobile Arena, looked like a 25-year-old at a workout Thursday to hype the fight.

Most boxing experts give Mayweather nearly every advantage and expect him to thrash McGregor and win the fight by a wide margin.

When the bell rings, he may not be equipped physically to deal with one of the best boxers of all-time, but McGregor is in his element every bit as much as Mayweather when it comes to dealing with the hype, handling the pressure and performing when the stakes are the highest.

McGregor, who praised Mayweather’s skill level, nonetheless predicted a knockout, within two rounds if they switch to 8-ounce gloves, he said.

That would be a feat of some note since Mayweather has only been down once as a pro, and it wasn’t really a true knockdown.

On Wednesday, the Nevada Athletic Commission is going to vote on a Mayweather request to switch from 10-ounce to eight-ounce gloves.
The Rio Olympics continue to be an example of why more and more cities are wary of hosting the games.

Rio 2016 has essentially become a financial disaster, with the games costing $13 billion in a mix of private and public money, according to a June Associated Press report.

Much of the Olympic infrastructure is abandoned or underused, including the $700 million athletes village that was supposed to be turned into luxury condos once the games were over.

Stephen Wade of the Associated Press recently reported via Twitter that the athletes village was "shuttered" and that only 7% of the condos had been sold.

Rio should serve as a warning to other countries about the costs of hosting the Olympics.

The images of nearly abandoned venues have surfaced at a time when costs of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have reportedly doubled to $12.6 billion, up from the $6 billion that was projected when Tokyo won the bid in 2013.
Justin Gatlin hopes athletics can be proud of him as world champion and wants his shock 100m victory to inspire others to come back from mistakes.

The 35-year-old American - twice banned for doping - stunned London Stadium by beating retiring eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt into third.

Gatlin - booed throughout the event - wants to be viewed as "a fighter".

"I've come back to the sport, worked hard, faced all the rules and penalties," he told BBC Sport.

"I've inspired other athletes to be better - young athletes. I've done so much in the communities at home."

After his victory in 9.92 seconds, he paid homage to the Jamaican who finished in 9.95 to take bronze behind Gatlin's 21-year-old compatriot Christian Coleman, who ran 9.94.
An Indian boxer won a title fight against a Chinese opponent before offering to hand back the prize as a gesture of peace between the two nations which are locked in a territorial dispute in the Himalayas.

Vijender Singh beat Zulpikar Maimaitiali on points on Saturday to retain his WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight title and take his opponent’s WBO Oriental super middleweight belt.

After the unanimous verdict in Mumbai, Singh hugged Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and other celebrities before returning to the ring, taking the microphone and saying: “I don’t want this title, I will give it back to Zulpikar,” adding: “I don’t want tension on the border, it’s a message of peace and that’s important.”

The gesture follows a stand-off in a remote frontier region beside the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan that has become increasingly tense.

On Thursday, China demanded India immediately remove troops from the border, accusing it of building up troops and repairing roads along its side of the border next to the Indian state of Sikkim.

The neighbours share a 3,500km frontier, large parts of which are disputed.
Jordan Morris's late strike lifted the United States to a 2-1 victory over Jamaica on Wednesday in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final.

The United States captured their sixth Gold Cup crown – one shy of Mexico's record seven victories in the regional championship for North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Jozy Altidore's superb free kick had put the United States ahead in the 45th minute, but Jamaica's Je-Vaughn Watson equalized in the 50th as the underdog Jamaicans pushed the US hard.

Morris sealed it in dramatic fashion with a goal in the 89th minute.

Jamaica were playing in their second straight Gold Cup final, after falling to Mexico in 2015.

That year they ousted the United States in the semifinals, while this year they sent the Mexicans packing.
Roger Federer has spent most of his life breaking records and passing milestones but the 35-year-old Swiss celebrated his greatest achievement here on Sunday on the court he loves more than any other in the world.

Since Spencer Gore claimed the first singles championship at Wimbledon 140 years ago no man had ever won the title eight times, but Federer finally pulled clear of William Renshaw and Pete Sampras, with whom he had shared the record of seven victories since 2012.

Marin Cilic, Federer’s opponent in a one-sided final, was unable to offer much of a challenge because of a painful blister on his left foot which left the 28-year-old Croat sobbing into his towel at a changeover midway through the second set.

Cilic was beaten 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 as Federer created history on the same patch of turf where he had made his first breakthrough 14 years earlier.

Federer claimed his eighth Wimbledon title at the age of 35 years and 342 days.

Having become the oldest men’s Grand Slam singles champion since 1972 when he won the Australian Open earlier this year, the Swiss has followed it by becoming the oldest man to win Wimbledon in the Open era.
Rio Ferdinand has been left heartbroken by the death today of his mother to cancer after she stood by his side through the turmoil of losing his wife just two years ago to the disease.

Janice St Fort, devoted mother to Rio, died in hospital at the age of 58 after losing her battle to breast cancer with her crushed family at her bedside.

Mrs St Fort was just 17 when she had Rio, and with their father playing little part in the brothers’ upbringing on a tough estate, her ability to instil discipline was crucial to their ability to keep out of trouble.

She was described as ‘the backbone of the family’ with one relative recalling: ‘If Janice told Rio to be home by 7pm, he’d be there by one minute to, or her voice would be echoing all over the estate.’

Just as the former Manchester United defender was coming to terms with the loss of Rebecca, his wife of six years, he has been hit with another hammer blow.

He was meant to feature in the Star Sixes exhibition tournament at the O2 in London tonight, but has withdrawn in light of the news.
He's known for outlandish confidence and running his mouth, but Conor McGregor's biggest insult to upcoming opponent Floyd Mayweather was more subtle than usual.

The UFC champion and boxing legend faced off for the first time ahead of the mega fight next month, with both McGregor and Mayweather trading endless verbal barbs.

But the biggest insult from the 28-year-old Irish-born fighter was hidden in plain view of Mayweather, with McGregor wearing a suit complete with pin stripes containing the words 'F**K YOU' throughout the press call.

The expletive, which has been used so often by McGregor towards his opponents it has become somewhat of a catchphrase, was written all over the handmade suit.

In front of 11,000 fans at LA's Staples Center, the pair met face-to-face for the first time since their money-spinning megafight was confirmed in June.

They'll next come face to face at T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas for their weigh-in and highly anticipated fight in late August.
Barcelona have announced Lionel Messi's contract renovation with the buy-out clause likely to rise to €300million (£264m).

Messi had left Barca supporters nervously trying to read the signs coming out of his camp as his current deal was allowed to run down to June 2018.

The 30-year-old all-time club-record goalscorer has been linked to the Premier League with last year's tax evasion case almost sending him into the arms of Manchester City but Barcelona have renewed vows with their greatest-ever player.

Messi got married to long-term partner Antonella Roccuzzo last Friday and he is still on honeymoon in the Caribbean but when he returns to training next week he will sign his new deal.

His new net salary will go up to £26.4m per season, putting him on over £500,000 per week.

And the Argentine will be able to top up his earnings by around 20 per cent in total if he meets various targets such as winning La Liga, the Champions League and Ballon d'Or.
