Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

There is a forty mile stretch of shoreline in Michigan which contains forms that are so strange in appearance, that they look as though they were sculpted by the hand of a giant artist.  The Lake Superior coastline, from Munising to Grand Marais, was seen as being such a natural oddity that it was established as the United States' first national lakeshore in 1966.

Boat tours are available which sail tourists past the formations of unusual shape and character.  Some of the rocks have such artistic shapes that they have been given names such as Miner's Castle, Indian Head, and Battleships Row.  The wind and waves have carved the rocks into pillars, arches, caves, and other interesting shapes.

When observing these incredible shapes and forms, one can't help but wonder what the Michigan Indian tribes thought of them.  Many Indian tribes believed that they were symbolic of the manitous that they believed governed over nature.  The rock that looks like a large Indian head may have represented some great warrior to them.

Today there are a multitude of cruiselines that offer relaxing cruises past these spectacular rock formations.  Gather the entire family and experience history together in a Pictured Rocks scenic Tour.
