Are You New to Powerboats?
Power boating can be a great deal of fun and it can be relaxing as well. That is if you know what you are doing when on your boat. If you know the rules of the water and know your boat well you are apt to have a lot more fun than if you are guessing at what to do.
Your Powerboat and the Equipment
You must know what you need to have on board your boat. It is also important to know your boat and how everything on it works. You will find it is more enjoyable if you know these things well. By knowing your boat inside out you will be able to handle any situation that comes at you.
The best way to learn about your boat is to read the owner’s manual that came with the powerboat. You can learn all about safety equipment as well as all about the electronics on the boat. For safety always make sure you have a marine radio so in the case of an emergency you will be able to contact the coast guard.
Know How to Navigate
If you don’t know where you are going you are probably going to be in for a bumpy ride. It is very important that you are familiar with the waterways you are traveling. Learn the areas well so you will know where there are objects hidden under the water. You want to know where the shallow spots are so you don’t risk running aground. You can learn a lot of this by reading navigational maps and charts. They will show you shipping channels, shallow areas and many other things. When you learn to navigate you will find that boating is much more relaxing.
You should also learn how to navigate with the use of GPS and compass. This way you will be able to know where you are located at all times and how to get back to port.
Learn Boating Rules
There are navigational rules that may give a particular boat the right of way. Did you know that a sail boat that is running only by sail has the right of way over your powerboat? There are other rules that you must follow when at sea or on water. It is important that you learn these rules for your own safety and for the safety of others on the water. Being on the water can be dangerous especially when people don’t follow the navigational rules.
Know the Safety Regulations
You need to learn what safety regulations are in place in the area you are boating. You want to know local, state and federal regulations in order to be safe and not risk the chance of a fine. The coast guard and other local agencies can come aboard your boat whenever they feel the need to in order to check that you are complying with the regulations. These regulations will be different depending on the size of the boat you have. One thing that is necessary no matter how big your boat is to have life preservers on hand for every person on the boat. Sometimes whistles, and emergency flares are also necessary.
If you learn about these things you will have a better and safer boating experience.
